Marc Kennedy, Pat Simmons, Jan Betker and Gerald Shymko to visit club.

Two-time Olympian and Olympic Gold Medalist, Marc Kennedy headlines 4 big name curlers set to visit Wadena this weekend. The weekend features a Friday Fundraiser, Saturday Curling Clinic, Saturday Celebrity Skips Games, and Sunday Junior Mini-Bonspiel. Marc will be joined by Saskatchewan Curling Legends Jan Betker, Gerald Shymko and Pat Simmons. All 4 celebrity curlers will be at the Saturday 6:30 Meet and Greet and Celebrity Skips Event the Wadena Curling Club. The Celebrities will skip 3 fans and will play each other in a 2-end round robin schedule starting about at 7:15. The event is free admission with a silver plate collection for Wadena Junior Curling and the general public can earn their way onto any celebrity skips team at the Wadena Health Action Group Auction event this Friday evening at the Wadena Hall. Marc will also be joined by Pat Simmons for a Saturday 9-5:30 Curling Clinic in Wadena with some of the latest clinic technology available. Spots are still available for the clinic for Adults or Juniors by contacting Scott Comfort at 306-338-9632 by Friday at 5:00PM or visiting the clubs Facebook Page.

Kennedy will have a busy couple days speaking to nearby schools Friday afternoon, doing a short clinic with the Wadena school curling programs, speaking at the HAG Auction, running the Curling Clinic, the Saturday Evening 6:30-7:15 Meet at Greet, and finally the Celebrity Skips Games set to start at 7:15.

-The Health Action Group Auction and Dinner is $25 for Advanced tickets and $35 a plate at the door
-Clinic 9:00-5:30 Saturday also featuring Pat Simmons: $100 for the day including lunch.
-Saturday at 6:30 the Meet and Greet/Celeb Skips games: free admission with a Silver Plate collection for Wadena Junior Curling.
-Saturday 6:30 Appetizer specials at Wadena Curling Club.
-Sunday Junior Developmental Bonspiel with Instructors and Coaches on the ice. $50 per team for two games ($50 per win)

A great crowd gathered at the Wadena Curling Club March 29th, 2017 to wish Team Syrota well at the at the 2017 Canadian Masters Women’s Championship Apr. 3-9 in Guelph, Ontario. The team played an exhibition game in the late afternoon before the evening event. Speeches were made by Conrad Eliason representing the Town of Wadena, A message was read from the Government of Saskatchewan Hugh Nerlien, Dian Bodnarek presented a cheque on behalf of the Wadena Curling Club, and of course the team addressed the crowd. Karol Narfason had also arranged a raffle table to help raise funds for the teams travel. The Club and team would like to thank Frontier Truck and Trailer, Narfason’s Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, RE-MAX Blue Chip Realty Scott and Flo, Birch Creek Pottery, Emil Syrota, RBC, Wadena Drugs, the Wadena Curling Club Valda’s, Nicks Place, Rosellen Bjornason – Amway, and Fara Hals- Avon for the generous donations. The club also provided a coffee and cake and friends and family brought a delicious spread of snacks for the event.

After winning the 2017 Masters Women’s Provincial Championship Team Syrota will now represent Saskatchewan at the National Championship. Syrota defeated Wendy Leach in the Provincial Final after defeating Leach in the 1 vs 1 game the day before to reach the Final. The team had gone 3-1 in their pool to reach the 1 vs 1 game against Leach. Team Syrota consists of Delores Syrota, Bev Krasowski, Donna Liebrecht, and Sylvia Broad. As an interesting side note this now completes the cycle for Syrota winning Green Jackets at the Junior, Women’s, Seniors, and Masters Levels.

Steve Moulding, Joel Rorquist, Evan Rorquist and Justin Fisher are Wadena Men’s Bonspiel Champs for 2017 after picking up a victory over the Comfort team in the Wadena Coop A Event. The Quill Plains B Event was picked up by Team Bottchar with Chad Moir taking over the skip position in place of Tom Boyes, Dustin Mikush sliding into 3rd as a spare, Maynard Prosko at second, and lead Murray Bottchar, The Wadena Drugs C Event was picked up by Lyle Leach, Eldon Vandensbossche, Scott Parson, and Grant Kerluke. The Insurance Matters D Event was won by D’Arcy Smale, Leighton Ward (4th), Ryan Pomedli, and Ian Norberg.

The club would like to thank all the sponsors, auctioneer Ian Lazar, auction helpers Grant Kerluke, Kevin Bjornson, Garry Leach, and Lyle Leach, Two Chicks Catering, emcee/draw maker/icemaker Scott Comfort, ice maker Dustin Mikush, the ladies that worked the bar and anyone else that helped with the event.

Two teams Wadena based have qualified for the Ramada Hotels U18 Championship in Moose Jaw, March 23-26, 2017. Team Karla Friesen (Wadena Curling Club) and Team Dustin Mikush (Wadena and Humboldt Curling Clubs) went undefeated at the Under 18 East Central Regional Playdown in Humboldt this past weekend to win their way to the Provincials. On the girls side, although only Kea currently lives in Wadena, the Kiland and Kennedy names are well known from years past in Wadena with parents that have grown up in the Wadena and Hendon Curling Clubs.

We would also like to congratulate Team Bindig and Team Springer on a great showing both loosing in the finals of the Regions. The two teams based out of Wadena with some Foam Lake connections will represent Wadena very well for years to come. Team Bindig, who had previously qualified for the Junior Boys Provincials this year consists of Jayden Bindig, Nathan Pomedli, Josh Mayor, and Ethan Nygaard with Coach Wendel Charbonneau. Team Pomedli consists of Julia Pomedli, Beth Springer, Brittany Andreas, and Jenna Hoffman and coach Dwight Pomedli.

Congratulations to Sylvia Broad for receiving the Ev Krahn Award at the Affinity CU Senior Provincials. Wadena’s Delores Syrota, Bev Krasowski, Donna Ell, and Sylvia Broad finished the round robin 4-3 and went on to defeat Team Janet Englot in a tiebreaker to make the Playoffs. However the Wadena Ladies lost the 2 vs 3 game to Team Arguin who went on to lose to the eventual champion @Sherry Anderson team.

On the Men’s side Jack Mally Ram Tough Leaguer’s Brent Franko, Richard Choquette, Murray Sunderland, and Greg Wittig also finished 4-3 in the round robin. Team Franko lost in the tiebreaker game vs Brian Humble, who they beat in the last round robin game to make the tiebreaker game. Humble went on lose a defensive battle 3-2 to Darrel McKee in the Final.
